Task C1.2: Segment Operational Units

What is Task C1.2?

Task C1.2 is part of the "Decide" phase in the Viability Canvas methodology, specifically within the "Plan the Product Flow" step (Step C1). This task instructs you to "Segment value streams into operational units for the steps in the value stream. Individual units can be allocated along individual steps and handed over unfinished products in various processing states. They can also work in parallel, for example, for different product variants. Other units can have a supporting role, e.g., an infrastructure team. Think also about alternative segmentations of the units."

Purpose of Segmenting Operational Units

The purpose of this task is to define the primary operational units (System 1s in VSM terminology) that will form the foundation of your viable organization. This serves several important functions:

  1. Creating manageability: Breaking down the overall value stream into discrete, manageable units
  2. Enabling autonomy: Defining units that can operate with relative independence
  3. Clarifying responsibilities: Establishing clear ownership for different parts of the value creation process
  4. Optimizing specialization: Creating units that can develop depth in specific capabilities
  5. Balancing workload: Ensuring units are appropriately sized for their responsibilities

By thoughtfully segmenting operational units, you establish the core value-creating elements of your organization in a way that balances autonomy and coordination needs.
